BuiltWith Review

BuiltWith profiles the tech stack behind any website, turning that data into lead lists, competitor research, and market analysis for sales teams.

BuiltWith answers one question at scale: what technology is this website running? It profiles sites for their analytics tools, e-commerce platforms, CMS, ad tech, and hundreds of other categories, then turns that into searchable lists — "every Shopify store without a reviews app," or "every SaaS site that dropped Segment last quarter." This review covers what the paid plans actually include, where the free tool stops being useful, and who the pricing makes sense for.

What kind of tool is BuiltWith?

BuiltWith is a technographic data platform, not an outreach or CRM tool. It doesn't send email, manage leads through a pipeline, or run campaigns — it answers questions about the technology footprint of individual sites or entire markets, then hands that data to whatever system you already use to act on it (a CRM, a spreadsheet, a sequencer). The free version, which requires no signup, lets anyone paste in a domain and see its detected stack; the paid tiers turn that into bulk lists, historical trend data, and export.

The company advertises coverage of 123,000+ tracked technologies across 491.9 million domains, with technology history going back more than 18 years for some sites — useful for questions like "when did this company adopt HubSpot" as much as "what is this company running today."

How it works

There's no setup in the traditional sense. A free lookup on builtwith.com returns a technology profile for any domain instantly. Paid accounts add the ability to run keyword and technology searches across the whole index — for example, pulling every domain currently running a specific analytics tag, e-commerce platform, or ad network — and to download the results as CSV or Excel, or push them into a connected CRM (Salesforce, HubSpot, Zoho, and Dynamics 365 are named integrations).

The workflow that matters commercially is the reverse-lookup: instead of researching one company at a time, a sales or market research team defines a technology signal ("uses Klaviyo," "added Shopify Plus in the last 90 days") and gets a list of matching companies to work from.

BuiltWith pricing (2026)

PlanMonthly priceTechnology lookupsLogins
Basic$2952/month1
Pro$495Unlimited1
Team$995UnlimitedUnlimited (Pro logins)

The number that actually matters here is the Basic plan's usage cap: 2 technology lookups and 2 keyword searches per month for $295. That's not a typo — Basic is priced like a full seat but rations the core feature so tightly that most buyers who need more than a couple of lookups a month will find themselves needing Pro at $495 within the first billing cycle anyway. Effectively, Pro (unlimited lookups, one login) is the real starting price for anyone doing regular prospecting work, not Basic. Team's jump to $995 buys unlimited logins rather than more data, so it only pays off once a second or third person on the team needs simultaneous access — a solo user gains nothing from Team over Pro. Annual contracts are available and BuiltWith notes access continues through the full paid term even if you cancel early, so weigh that against the flexibility of a monthly plan before committing to a year.

What we could and couldn't verify

We verified current plan pricing, feature lists, and integration claims directly from BuiltWith's own site. We were not able to independently verify third-party sentiment for this review: G2 and Trustpilot both blocked automated access to their review pages during this research, and we did not turn up citable Reddit threads with meaningful discussion of BuiltWith specifically. That means we can't responsibly cite a review count or star rating here, positive or negative — treat the absence of a rating in the table above as "unverified," not "no reviews exist." If you're evaluating BuiltWith for a purchase, we'd recommend checking G2 and Capterra directly before committing to an annual plan.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Very large index: 491.9 million domains and 123,000+ tracked technologies, per the vendor
  • Long historical data (18+ years) supports adoption-trend and timing research, not just current snapshots
  • Free single-site lookups require no signup, useful for one-off research
  • Named CRM integrations (Salesforce, HubSpot, Zoho, Dynamics 365) reduce export friction
  • CSV/Excel export included on all paid tiers

Cons

  • Basic plan's 2-lookup monthly cap makes it a weak entry point at $295/month
  • No published discount or annual-savings figure to compare against monthly pricing
  • Pricing is enterprise-oriented; casual or small-budget users are better served by lighter tools
  • Independent review data was not verifiable at the time of this research

BuiltWith alternatives

  • Wappalyzer — a much cheaper, lighter-weight technology profiler with a browser extension and API; less historical depth but far more accessible pricing.
  • WhatRuns — free browser-extension technology detector aimed at individual lookups rather than bulk list-building.
  • Datanyze — technographic data bundled with contact and sales intelligence, competing more directly on lead-gen workflows than raw tech data.
  • Enlyft — technographic and firmographic data aimed at account-based marketing and predictive lead scoring.
  • Demandbase — broader account-based marketing platform that includes technographic signals as one input among many, at a higher price point.

If your need is a quick, occasional lookup, Wappalyzer or WhatRuns will cover it for a fraction of BuiltWith's price. BuiltWith's case is the depth and breadth of its index for teams that build lead lists or run market research on technology adoption at volume.

Who should use BuiltWith — and who shouldn't

Good fit: sales and RevOps teams that prospect by technology signal ("companies using X but not Y"); market researchers and analysts tracking adoption trends over years, not days; agencies building a pitch around a platform migration who need to prove market size.

Poor fit: anyone who only needs to check a handful of sites occasionally — the free lookup tool covers that without a subscription; small budgets, since even the entry tier runs $295/month with a usage cap that pushes most buyers to $495; teams that need outreach or CRM functionality bundled in, since BuiltWith is data only and hands off to whatever system you already run.
